Commission Approves Contracts, Adopts Resolutions, and Updates Policy and Procedures Manuals

During the regular meeting of the Cherokee County Commission Tuesday afternoon, the Commission approved an agreement with the State of Alabama to accept a portion of “Old” Highway 411.

At the request of the Sheriff’s Department, Contracts were approved for the construction of A new training center at Leesburg. The total of all contracts approved was $172,975.

A resolution was adopted authorizing the Alabama Department of Revenue to administer and collect local motor fuel taxes levied by the County Commission. The County is changing collections from AVENU for cost savings.

The Commission declared 3 vehicles as surplus for the Sheriff’s department which will be sold at the next available public auction. One was a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, a 2017 Ford Explorer, and a 2003 Ford F-350.

An amendment of resolution and order relating to the reimbursement resolution and order which was adopted on April 8th was approved.

The Policy and Procedures manual for the Animal Control Department was updated to reflect animals can be kept up to 10 days before being adopted out, transferred to a shelter or euthanized.

At the request of EMA Director Shawn Rogers, the Commission approved advertising for bids on three fire skid units which will be placed at 3 different fire departments. The funding is from a Department of Homeland Security Grant. These units will be for wild land fire fighting units.

The Commission approved the creation of a new position for the County EMA which will be for a Deputy Director to serve in the absence of the Director. The starting pay will be Grade 9, Step 1 at a rate of $24.03 per hour. The job was posted and approved for advertising.

The Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual was amended to allow the County Highway Department to accept applications for the Highway Maintenance Technician positions on an ongoing basis to develop a pool of qualified applicants. The Bereavement Leave policy for County Employees was amended to include Probationary Employees.

The next County Commission Meeting will be on Monday, June 10th in the Commission Chambers.
