Johnsons come up big for Cherokee County; Lady Warriors finish 4A track and field state runners-up

GULF SHORES – Cherokee County High School senior Mary Hayes Johnson paced the Lady Warrior track and field team to a Class 4A state runner-up finish on Friday and Saturday in Gulf Shores.

Bayside Academy won the 4A girls meet with a total of 108 points, while the Lady Warriors earned 66 points. Brooks finished third with 55 points.

Johnson took gold in the 200-meter dash (24.86) and the 400-meter dash (56.58), and silver in the 100-meter dash (12.23) and the 100-meter hurdles (15.11).

Shamiya McElrath took silver in the 400-meter dash (58.62). She was also seventh in the 100-meter dash (12.48). Ashton Pruett finished fourth in the shot put (32’8”), followed by Deannia Starr in seventh (31’7.5″).

The Lady Warriors were also third in both the 4×100 meter relay (50.13) and the 4×400 meter relay (4:12.88). They were also eighth in the 4×800 (10:52.48).

The Warrior boys finished seventh in the 4A boys meet with 37 points scored. Hamilton won the meet with 94 points, followed by Brooks in second with 56 points. Anniston finished third with 54 points.

Alex Johnson earned gold in three events: the 100-meter dash (10.73), the 200-meter dash (21.68) and the 400-meter dash (49.68).

The Warrior boys earned a fourth-place finish in the 4×400 meter relay (3:31.32).

In the 4A boys ambulatory events, Daniel Burton won gold in the shot put (14’4”) and the discus (38’8”).
