Piedmont’s Pope and Brothers both homer, Smith fans 10 in softball win over Cherokee County

PIEDMONT – The Piedmont Lady Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and two more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-0 softball win over Cherokee County on Thursday.

Ava Pope and Cayla Brothers both homered and had two RBIs. Cadence Buttram went 2-for-4 with a run. Savannah Smith was 1-for-3 with a run. Amiyah Thomas was also 1-for-3.

Carson Young had a run and a RBI. Jaycee Glover drove in a run and N’Kiya Bothwell scored a run.

Smith picked up the win. She went the distance and scattered five hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts.

Audrey Haygood and Anna Walker led the Lady Warriors with a pair of hits apiece. One of Walker’s hits was a double. Samantha Stubbs also had a double.

Grayson Tucker suffered the loss. She worked three innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Abby Lea tossed two innings and surrendered two earned runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout. Emma Hill worked an inning of no-hit ball with a strikeout.

Both teams prepare to host their respective area tournaments on Saturday.
