Spring Garden softball rallies at White Plains in eight innings

WHITE PLAINS – Spring Garden rallied past White Plains to win 4-2 in eight innings in softball action on Monday.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh, Avery Steward led off with a walk. Helena Ingram followed with a base hit to right to move Steward to third. Maggie Reedy then had a sacrifice fly to score Steward.

With one out, Maggie Jarrett delivered a grounder to short and beat out the throw, which moved Ingram to third. With two outs, Lilly McCain managed a hit to left to score Ingram to tie the score at 2-2.

In the top of the eighth, international tiebreaker rules came into play, with Addie Word at second base. A Rylie Ham sacrifice bunt moved Word to third base. Olivia Law followed with a sacrifice bunt past third to score Word to give the Lady Panthers a 3-2 lead.

Steward then singled to right followed by an Ingram single to right, which moved Steward to third. She then scored on a fielding error to make it a 4-2 game.

White Plains failed to score in its half of the inning, allowing Spring Garden to escape with the win.

Ingram led Spring Garden with a pair of hits, including a double. She also scored a run. Steward collected a hit, a walk and two runs. McCain came away with a hit and a RBI. Jarrett finished with a hit.

Steward picked up the win in the circle. She tossed all eight innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits with eight walks and six strikeouts.

Spring Garden travels to Appalachian on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
