The first Alabama Sports Writers Association baseball and softball rankings were released early Thursday morning. The Piedmont Bulldogs are the highest ranked teams in the WEIS coverage area.

Piedmont (10-4) is atop the Class 3A baseball standings, while the Lady Bulldogs (7-2) are fifth in softball.

Joining Piedmont from the area in the top 10 in baseball is Class 2A Collinsville (12-2) at No. 6 and Class 1A Gaylesville (10-2) at No. 7. Class 4A Cherokee County (12-6) and Class 1A Spring Garden (5-5) received nominations.

In softball, Spring Garden (8-3) comes in at No. 6 and Class 2A Sand Rock (5-9) begins the season at No. 9. Cherokee County (12-2) received nominations for the Class 4A poll.
