Lady Warriors’ Johnson wins two events in state track meet, then leads girls basketball team to area tournament win

Cherokee County High School senior Mary Hayes Johnson had quite a day on Saturday. She began her day at the Birmingham CrossPlex by winning two events in the Class 4A-5A State Indoor Track and Field Meet.

Johnson took gold in the 4A-5A girls 400 meter (58.11) and the 4A-5A girls 60-meter hurdles (9.28).

Then on Saturday evening, she returned to Centre and led the Lady Warrior basketball team to a 60-26 victory over Cleburne County in the Class 4A, Area 10 girls basketball tournament.

Johnson scored 12 points, including nine in the first quarter for the Lady Warriors (24-4). She also had six steals, three assists and three rebounds.

Audrey Haygood netted nine points along with three steals, an assist and a rebound. Jolie Alexander added eight points and four boards. Nevaeh Gaidurgis managed seven points and eight rebounds. Ava Haygood and Ellisan Givens both finished with five points. Ava Haygood also had seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. Givens gained five boards.

Glorianna Brown led the Lady Tigers with 17 points.

Cherokee County went on a 23-0 first quarter run and held a 38-10 advantage at halftime. The Lady Warriors led 49-18 after three quarters.

Cherokee County advances to Tuesday’s area championship game at 5:30 p.m., where they will take on Jacksonville at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Golden Eagles defeated White Plains 70-29 in the other area tournament semifinal.
