Spring Garden’s Austin earns 747th girls basketball win

SPRING GARDEN – Spring Garden’s Ricky Austin earned his 747th girls basketball victory on Tuesday with a 66-38 victory over Class 6A Oxford.

Austin began coaching at Spring Garden in 1996 and currently holds a 747-168 girls record. His record includes seven state championships.

Austin is six wins shy of surpassing former Clarke County, Bob Jones and Sparkman coach June Seals in career girls wins. Seals had 752 girls wins from 1977-2012.

On Tuesday, Chloe Rule led the Lady Panthers (26-1) with 20 points, 10 rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block. Libby Brown sank five treys and had 19 points, four rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block. Maggie Jarrett delivered 14 points, including three treys, with five rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block. Ace Austin finished with 10 points, six assists, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

The Lady Panthers jumped out on a 19-6 run and held a 35-16 advantage at halftime. Spring Garden led 46-25 lead after three quarters.

In boys’ action, Spring Garden posted a 54-38 win over Donoho.

Jake Welsh led the Panthers (22-4) with 18 points. Cole Bailey rang for 12 points, including a pair of treys. Connor Bates tallied 11 points and Chapel Pope finished with eight points.

Sam Johnson topped the Falcons with 13 points. Jordan Cameron finished with 11 points.

Donoho kept things close in the first half. Spring Garden led 12-11 after one. Both teams were tied at 23 heading into halftime. Spring Garden took a 39-31 edge after three quarters and outscored the Falcons 15-7 in the fourth for the final.
