Spring Garden girls, boys top seeds in upcoming Cherokee County Basketball Tournament

CENTRE – It’s been a banner basketball season so far in Spring Garden, and the Panthers were rewarded for that by the Cherokee County basketball coaches.

Spring Garden’s girls, boys and junior varsity boys were all selected as top seeds for the upcoming Cherokee County Tournament. This year’s tournament, also hosted by Spring Garden, will be played Jan. 18-20 at Richard Lindsey Arena on the Gadsden State-Cherokee campus in Centre. Admission is $8 per person each day.

The action begins Thursday with junior varsity boys action between Sand Rock and Gaylesville at 3 p.m., followed by Cedar Bluff and Cherokee County at 4 p.m. The Sand Rock-Gaylesville winner will battle Spring Garden at 5 p.m.

Thursday’s varsity action tips off at 6 p.m., with Cedar Bluff tangling with Gaylesville’s girls. Sand Rock’s boys take on Cherokee County in Thursday’s nightcap at 7 p.m.

Then on Friday, Spring Garden’s girls take on the winner of Thursday’s Cedar Bluff-Gaylesville game at 4 p.m., followed by the Sand Rock-Cherokee County boys winner against Spring Garden at 5:30 p.m.

Cherokee County’s girls do battle with Sand Rock on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by Gaylesville and Cedar Bluff’s boys at 8:30 p.m.

Championship Saturday begins with junior varsity girls action between Cherokee County and Sand Rock at 3 p.m., followed by the junior varsity boys championship at 4 p.m.

The varsity girls championship game is set for 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys title game at 7 p.m.

Spring Garden’s varsity girls will be seeking their fifth straight county championship. The Lady Panthers defeated Cherokee County 59-23 in last year’s title game.

Cherokee County defeated Sand Rock 55-53 on a tip in by Malachi Horton to win last year’s varsity boys championship. It was the Warriors’ first county tournament title since 2018.
