FIREFIGHTERS BATTLE STRUCTURE FIRE IN BITTER COLD TEMPERATURES
According to Spring Creek Fire Chief Jamey Walker, Spring Creek, Ellisville, and McCords Fire Departments were dispatched to a reported structure fire just before 10:30 PM Tuesday night, in the 8500 block of U.S. Hwy 411 North close to the Dollar General.
After arriving on-scene a residential structure as well as a camper behind the home were found to be on fire.
After battling, not only the fire but also the frigid temps and freezing water, the fire was brought under control just after 11:00 p.m.
At the time of the fire, the temperature was 13 degrees. Due to water shuttle operations, the Alabama Department of Transportation had to respond to treat portions of U.S. Hwy 411N because of the water flash freezing on the roadway. A portion of the highway remained shut down until the ice could be treated.
Chief Walker said “the camper was already 100% involved and the residential structure was about 70% involved when the first units arrived on-scene. Despite the extremely cold temperatures, firefighters worked diligently to get this fire under control and extinguished as quickly as possible. I want to thank Ellisville and McCords for their quick response as well as Floyd EMS for standing by to ensure our safety and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office deputies for their help with traffic control. Tonight was a prime example of how smooth things flow when we all work together as a team.”
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
