School Closings Due to Severe Weather

After Governor Kay Ivey declared a “State of Emergency” for 25 Alabama counties ahead of the threat of “Winter Weather”, several school systems began announcing they would be closed on Tuesday.

Most schools statewide are closed Monday, for the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

The counties included in Ivey’s declaration include:

Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Etowah, Fayette, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Morgan, Pickens, St. Clair, as well as Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston.

Winter storm warnings have been issued for parts of both the North and also West Alabama, that could get up to 6 inches of snow starting tonight and lasting into Tuesday.  This list will be updated as more systems announce changes.

The schools and districts below have announced they will close or go to remote learning on Tuesday:

Alabama Aerospace and Aviation High SchoolClosed Tuesday.

Bessemer Academy – Closed Tuesday.

Bessemer City SchoolsClosed Tuesday.

Breakthrough Charter SchoolRemote learning Tuesday.

Chilton County Schools – Schools open at 11 a.m. Tuesday, buses operate on a three-hour delay.

Dallas County Schools – Remote learning Tuesday.

Dothan City Schools – Dothan Preparatory Academy, PASS Academy, and ARC will do virtual learning on Tuesday due to weather damage from last week’s storms.

Fairfield City Schools – Closed Tuesday.

Homewood City SchoolsClosed Tuesday.

Jasper City SchoolsSchools delayed till 10 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Jefferson County SchoolsClosed Tuesday.

Leeds City Schools Closed Tuesday.

Magic City Acceptance Academy – Closed Tuesday.

Midfield City SchoolsClosed Tuesday.

Mountain Brook City SchoolsClosed Tuesday.

Opelika City Schools – No students attend Tuesday due to pre-planned professional development day.

Roanoke City Schools – Virtual learning Tuesday and Wednesday.

Selma City Schools – Remote learning Tuesday.

Tarrant City SchoolsClosed Tuesday.

Trussville City SchoolsClosed Tuesday.

Vestavia Hills City SchoolsClosed Tuesday.

Walker County Schools – Two-hour delay Tuesday and Wednesday.
