Traffanstedt earns first win as Sand Rock boys basketball coach

GADSDEN – Nick Traffanstedt earned his first win as Sand Rock boys basketball coach Thursday as the Wildcats defeated Coosa Christian in Gadsden 59-44.

The Wildcats had four players reach double figures, led by Cam Gifford’s 17 points. Carson Wiford tossed in 14 points, including three 3-pointers. Jonas Browder added 12 points, all on 3-pointers. Ty Traffanstedt also finished with 12 points.

“I’m very proud of each and every young man on this team for the hard work and dedication they show every day,” Coach Traffanstedt said. “I’m blessed as a coach to have such hard-working kids. These kids play hard every  game and it’s nice to see hard work rewarded.”

Alex Nunez 13 points. DJ Mackey nine points. Jadan Burns and Jaylen Jones both finished with eight points.

Sand Rock led at each of the quarter breaks. The Wildcats held an 11-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter and built a 27-21 edge at halftime. Sand Rock extended its lead to 45-36 after three quarters.

The Lady Wildcats also earned a win in a rout by the final of 71-22.

Katelyn St.Clair tossed in 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, to lead the Lady Wildcats (10-2). St.Clair also had four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Zoey Handy added 14 points, seven boards and six steals. Peyton Johnson contributed 10 points. Chloe Stephens had nine points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Molly Grace Lay finished with seven points, four steals and three assists.

Sand Rock hosts the Cherokee Classic sponsored by AlabamaONE Credit Union this weekend. The Lady Wildcats take on Westbrook Christian on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Wildcat boys entertain New Hope at 1 p.m.
