Trojans top Spring Garden in treys, but Panthers post area basketball win

GAYLESVILLE – The Spring Garden Panthers and Gaylesville Trojans aren’t afraid to fire up the 3-point shots. The two teams combined to connect on 21 treys in the game. The Trojans sank 12 of them, but it was Spring Garden that came away with a 79-53 victory in Class 1A, Area 12 boys basketball action on Thursday.

Jake Welsh led five Panther players in double figures with 17 points. He also had 10 rebounds and five assists. Cole Bailey and Chapel Pope both posted 12 points. Bailey added six assists, three rebounds and three steals. Pope had a pair of 3-pointers. John Welsh came away with 11 points, eight boards, five assists and four steals. Connor Bates contributed 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Noah Barber netted eight points, including a pair of treys, with four rebounds. Henry Chaney finished with five points.

Kuper Bradley led four Trojans in double figures with 14 points, including three 3-pointers. He also had three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Collin Hendon also connected on three treys and had 11 points. He also had seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal.

Caden Angle also added 11 points, including three 3-pointers. He also collected three rebounds, three blocks and a steal. Kyler Bradley also contributed 11 points to go along with six steals, two rebounds, two assists and a block.

Landon Chumbler collected six points (2 3s) to go along with three rebounds, an assist and a block.

Spring Garden built a 25-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Panthers extended their lead to 49-20 at halftime and led 69-37 after three quarters.

In girls action, Spring Garden scored 51 unanswered points en route to an 83-13 victory over the Lady Trojans.

Libby Brown led the Lady Panthers with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. She also had four rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block. Kristen Lewis sank four treys and had 12 points. She also added six boards, three steals and an assist.

Olivia Law also netted 12 points to go along with eight steals, five rebounds, two assists and a block. Allie Mobbs managed 10 points and seven rebounds. Ace Austin also scored 10 points and collected four assists, three steals, two rebounds and a block.

Chloe Rule and Maggie Reedy both netted eight points. Avery Steward came away with six points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Maggie Jarrett finished with four points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Emma Givens led the Lady Trojans with seven points. Gracie Dawson finished with six points.

Spring Garden’s girls play in the Dynamic Hoopfest in Jackson, Tenn., on Friday and Saturday. The Panther boys host Trion, Ga., on Friday. Gaylesville’s boys and girls travel to Waterloo on Friday.
