There Are Some Changes to Alabama License Plates Set for 2024

There are some changes to Alabama license plates set for 2024, and that, includes new tags and designs.

The Alabama Department of Revenue hasn’t released images for the new tags, but here is what will be available in the new year:

  • A new distinctive Air Medal license plate is being created. It will only be issued to Alabama residents who are recipients of the Air Medal. Created in 1942, the medal is awarded for meritorious achievements while participating in an aerial flight.
  • Another new distinctive plate will be available for Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S. military’s campaign against ISIS. The license plate is only available to military veterans of Operation Inherent Resolve.
  • A license plate to benefit brain cancer research will be available starting Jan. 1.
  • Plates for the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Space Force had been added to the list of service branches available for a military tag. The new Marine tag will replace the current one.

Rules have also changed for who is eligible for the USS Alabama plate.

That plate is ONLY available – at the time – to the current chair of the USS Alabama Battleship Commission.  Starting on January 1st, 2024 – the tag will also be available to both current and former commission chairs.

The list of eligible people will be provided each year by the commission.

In another change starting January 1st of 2024 all proceeds from the $50 fee for the Emergency Medical Service license plate will be split between the Alabama Association of Ambulance Services and Alabama Emergency Medical Services Association.

Proceeds now go to the state’s general fund.
