Look For Changes in 2024 License Plates

There are a handful of changes to Alabama license plates set for 2024, including new tags and designs.

The Alabama Department of Revenue hasn’t released images for the new tags, here is what will be available in the new year:

A new distinctive Air Medal license plate is being created. It will only be issued to Alabama residents who are recipients of the Air Medal. Created in 1942, the medal is awarded for meritorious achievements while participating in an aerial flight.

  • Another new distinctive plate will be available for Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S. military’s campaign against ISIS. The license plate is only available to military veterans of Operation Inherent Resolve.
  • A license plate to benefit brain cancer research will be available starting Jan. 1.
  • Plates for the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Space Force had been added to the list of service branches available for a military tag. The new Marine tag will replace the current one.
  • Rules have also changed for who is eligible for the USS Alabama plate. Currently, the plate is only available to the current chair of the USS Alabama Battleship Commission. Starting Jan. 1, 2024, the tag would also be available to both current and former commission chairs. The list of eligible people will be provided each year by the commission.
