MONTGOMERY – Eight area football players were recognized for their performances in Week 8 in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Spotlight.
Cherokee County High School’s Jacob Cornejo piled up 268 rushing yards on 17 carries with four touchdowns covering 38, 14, 71 and 50 yards in the Warriors’ 49-0 victory over Etowah. The victory clinched Cherokee County’s second straight Class 4A, Region 6 title.
Sand Rock’s Kane Robison, a former guard, compiled 175 yards on 19 carries, including a 20-yard touchdown run, in the Wildcats’ 34-0 victory over Ider.
Wildcat quarterback Alec Ashley completed 13-of-21 pass attempts for 209 yards and three touchdowns covering 13, 26 and 29 yards – all to junior receiver Gavynn Cunningham – in Sand Rock’s win. Cunningham finished with four catches for 91 yards.
Spring Garden’s John Welsh ran for 148 yards eight carries with a 59-yard dash for one score and caught two passes for 84 yards with TD receptions of 49 and 35 yards as the Panthers beat Donoho 49-7.
Piedmont’s Cole Wilson completed 13-of-24 pass attempts for 187 yards and two touchdowns, connections of 75 and 35 yards to Ishmael Bethel, in the Bulldogs’ 42-27 loss to Geraldine.
And at Collinsville, Quintavious Rogers returned two punts for touchdowns covering 60 and 29 yards to lead the Panthers to a 55-14 win over Whitesburg Christian. He scored the Panthers’ first touchdown on a 7-yard run in the first quarter and added a 3-yard touchdown run in the second period.
