A Glencoe man was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham on Tuesday night after his car rolled off the mountainside near Paseur Park and burned. The man wasn’t identified and reports on his condition remain unavailable.
Police Captain Lane Keener said a Ford Fusion was traveling at a high rate of speed from Mitchell Boulevard toward Highland Avenue about 9:00pm and didn’t make the turn onto Highland – left the roadway – and struck a boulder at Paseur Park. Keener said the Fusion then went over the edge at the Park, and struck a tree and rolled about 40 feet down the mountainside.
Fire Chief Wil Reed said that dispatch received a call at 9:06pm about a vehicle off of the mountain in the Bellevue area, and as firefighters responded the call was upgraded to: “vehicle on fire and someone calling for help.”
Reed said when firefighters arrived, they found both the vehicle and the surrounding woods on fire, a dangerous situation in the present dry conditions.
They extinguished both fires quickly; Reed said the vehicle was “burned very badly” and the first responders performed a high-angle rescue on the driver.
We’ll have additional information as it’s made available.
