HIGDON – Sand Rock freshman quarterback Alec Ashley completed 8-of-9 pass attempts for 143 yards and two touchdowns, but they weren’t enough to lead the Sand Rock Wildcats past North Sand Mountain on Friday. The Bison claimed a 47-28 victory in Class 2A, Region 7 football action.
Bison quarterback Landon Keller also had a big night throwing the football. He completed 10 of his 14 pass attempts for 202 yards and three scores to lead North Sand Mountain to the win.
Keller put the Bison (4-2, 3-1) on top in the first quarter on a 7-yard pass. Cooper Smith connected on the extra point to provide North Sand Mountain an early 7-0 advantage.
Sand Rock (1-6, 1-3) countered with Ashley’s 16-yard touchdown toss to Gavynn Cunningham. The point after was no good, keeping the Bison in front 7-6.
Cunningham finished the game catching three passes for 106 yards and two scores.
Kaden Moore accounted for North Sand Mountain’s next score on a 19-yard run. The Bison led 14-6 after one.
Keller struck for two more touchdown passes in the second quarter – a 20-yard connection with Kade Davis and a 47-yard toss to Duncan Wilks – to push the Bison lead to 28-6.
Ashley delivered an 80-yard scoring strike to Cunningham. Gatlin Cox accounted for the 2-point conversion to make it a 28-14 game at halftime.
The Bison’s Hank Farmer opened the third-quarter scoring with his 9-yard touchdown run to extend North Sand Mountain’s lead to 34-14.
Kane Robison and Landon Chadwick had touchdown runs of 2 and 17 yards for Sand Rock. North Sand Mountain added two more touchdowns in the second half for the final.
Sand Rock is at Fyffe on Friday. North Sand Mountain travels to Pisgah.
