WOODVILLE – The Woodville Panthers overcame red-zone turnover issues with two second-half touchdowns to defeat visiting Class 1A, Region 7 foe Gaylesville 23-8 on a foggy homecoming at Frazier Field in Woodville Friday night.
With the win, Woodville (5-1, 2-1) tied the program’s single-season record with five set twice previously by the 2016 and 2020 teams.
But Gaylesville (1-6, 1-3) made the Panthers work for it.
Woodville committed the first of three red-zone turnovers on its first drive before taking an 8-0 halftime lead thanks to quarterback Sam Peek’s touchdown run and two-point conversion on its second drive.
After Gaylesville’s Jack Sentell returned a Woodville fumble for a touchdown in the third quarter, Peek scored two more second-half touchdowns to help the Panthers clinch their third straight win.
Peek ran for 135 yards and completed 6-of-10 passes for 101 yards. Ace Weaver ran for 125 yards.
Gaylesville is off this Friday, while Woodville is at Decatur Heritage.
