Sand Rock rallies for 14-7 homecoming win over Section

SAND ROCK – Sand Rock junior Gatlin Cox caught the game-winning touchdown pass and ensuing 2-point conversion from freshman quarterback Alec Ashley in the fourth quarter, lifting the Wildcats to a 14-7 homecoming victory over Section in Class 2A, Region 7 football action on Friday. It was Sand Rock’s first win of the season.

Cox also made an impact on defense with four tackles, an interception and fumble recovery.

Section (0-4, 0-2) took a 7-0 first-quarter lead on Jackson LeRoy’s 5-yard touchdown run. It remained 7-0 until the fourth quarter, when Sand Rock’s Kane Robison scored on a 3-yard run. The extra point was no good, keeping the score at 7-6.

That set the stage for Ashley’s 7-yard touchdown toss to Cox, then Ashley hit Cox on the 2-point conversion for the final.

Ashley finished the game completing 4-of-13 pass attempts for 46 yards for Sand Rock (1-3, 1-1).

Taiven Martin led the Lions by completing 4-of-9 pass attempts for 68 yards. He also ran for 50 yards on 13 carries.

Sand Rock hosts Collinsville on Friday while Section hosts Fyffe.
