SHANNON FAGAN: Welcome to the new SEC

One of the things I look forward to most every football season is Thursday nights. We broadcast our End Zone Show, where we preview the weekend ahead in both high school and SEC football action.

The 2023 season is fast approaching, and even with the potential conversations brewing for those battles, I can’t help but look even further to 2024.

On Wednesday evening, the SEC released its conference opponents for 2024. That’s when the league welcomes its two newest members, Texas and Oklahoma, into the fold.

The league will waste little time in getting their current members introduced to their new conference members. Every one of them will play either the Longhorns or Sooners in 2024.

I thought ESPN pundit Paul Finebaum articulated it best when he said “I don’t know what Nick Saban’s doing tonight, but I’m sure he is looking around for a drink.”

Yeah, that’s how intense it’s going to be. Not just for the Alabama Crimson Tide, but the SEC at large week in and week out.

I’d be very shocked if a team runs the table and goes undefeated. However, one thing is for certain. It will make for some interesting discussions on our WEIS End Zone Show roundtable come the fall of 2024.

I’ve listed some of the best 2024 bowl games, I mean matchups, for select teams below.

Better buckle up for a bumpy ride, because 2024 won’t be for the faint of heart.

Alabama

We’ll begin with the aforementioned Crimson Tide. If Alabama somehow wins another national championship at the end of the 2024 season, it will have earned it.

The Crimson Tide has road games at LSU, at Oklahoma and at Tennessee, and welcomes two-time defending champion Georgia and rival Auburn to Bryant-Denny Stadium. Add in a non-conference game at Wisconsin and the Tide’s strength of schedule should be through the roof.

Auburn

Like Alabama, Auburn’s schedule isn’t for the faint of heart either. Texas A&M, Arkansas and Oklahoma all come to The Plains in 2024, while road games at rivals Alabama and Georgia promise to be tough tests for the Tigers.

Georgia

The Bulldogs keep their annual battle with the Florida Gators in Jacksonville, and they also welcome Auburn and Tennessee to Athens. Road games include Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas.

Tennessee

Rocky Top takes on a new meaning in 2024. The Vols have home dates with Alabama, Florida and Kentucky, then hit the road to Georgia, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

LSU

They’ll be batting down the hatches in Baton Rouge. The Tigers’ home games include Alabama, Ole Miss and Oklahoma. LSU’s road games include Texas A&M, Arkansas and Florida.

Ole Miss

Lane Kiffin will have to pull out all the tricks in 2024 with home games against Georgia, Oklahoma and Kentucky. The Rebels’ road games include Arkansas, Florida and LSU.

Florida

The Gators welcome LSU, Texas A&M and Ole Miss to the Swamp in 2024. They’ll keep their annual rivalry game with Georgia in Jacksonville, then have road trips to Tennessee and Texas.

Arkansas

Old Southwest Conference rivals renew their rivalry when Texas travels to Fayettville to face the Razorbacks. Other home games include LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee. The Hogs also have a neutral site game with Texas A&M in Arlington, and a tough road contest at Auburn.

Texas

As I mentioned with Arkansas, Texas will also tangle with longtime Southwest Conference and Big 12 rival Texas A&M for the first time since 2011. The Longhorns also have the annual Red River Showdown with Oklahoma in Dallas. Florida and Georgia also pay visits to Austin.

Oklahoma

As I mentioned with Texas, the SEC christens its first Red River Showdown when the Sooners hook up the Longhorns in Dallas. Oklahoma’s home games include Alabama and Tennessee. The Sooners will also travel to LSU, Auburn and Ole Miss.
