Visit to Nation’s Fallen Officers Memorial
Memorial services were held over the weekend and on Monday at our Nation’s Capitol for America’s fallen officers from 2022. Sheriff’s Office Corporal Keith Morgan and Cedar Bluff Police Sergeant Chris Vaughn were both honored during the services and their names were etched onto the wall at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver, Chief Deputy Josh Summerford, Lt. Nick Vaughn, Deputy Dalton Cosby, Deputy Zonna Green and Investigator Michael Green, along with families of the fallen, joined thousands of other law enforcement officers and families from across the nation at the memorial services.
Deputy Green and Inv. Green participated in the honor guard detail for Monday’s memorial service located on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol. During the service, Sheriff Shaver and Chief Deputy Summerford, represented the family of Cpl. Morgan and Sgt. Vaughn, respectively, by placing a flower in the wreath and receiving their medals of honor.
There are over 23,000 names on the walls of the National Memorial that was erected in 1991. Appropriate words from President George H.W. Bush are engraved on the Memorial from the opening ceremony, “Carved on these walls is the story of America, of a continuing quest to preserve both democracy and decency, and to protect a national treasure that we call the American dream.”
Sheriff Shaver said, “the memorial services were difficult for both families and co-workers, but it is important that we honor fallen officers.”
The annual services are organized by the National Fraternal Order of Police and the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund.
