Spring Garden, Piedmont reach East Softball Regional championship round

ALBERTVILLE – The Spring Garden Lady Panthers and Piedmont Lady Bulldogs are a win away from clinching a berth in next week’s state softball tournament after winning a pair of games on Tuesday in the East Softball Regional at Sand Mountain Park. 

Class 1A Spring Garden began its day with a 13-3 victory over Appalachian. The Lady Panthers then defeated Ragland 14-8 to reach the championship round, where they will take on top-ranked Skyline at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

Cedar Bluff got off to a strong start with a 19-4 victory in its tournament opener against Victory Christian, but then fell to the losers bracket after losing to Skyline 12-1. Cedar Bluff will face Appalachian in an elimination game on Wednesday at 10:45 a.m.

Gaylesville’s season ended on Tuesday with losses to Ragland (10-5) and Appalachian (16-2).

In Class 2A, Sand Rock blanked Woodland 10-0 in its tournament opener. The Lady Wildcats then played Pisgah and fell to the Lady Eagles by the final of 5-3. Sand Rock will play in the losers bracket on Wednesday at 9 a.m. against Ider, which eliminated Fyffe 5-3 in other 2A regional action on Tuesday.

And in Class 3A, the Piedmont Lady Bulldogs wasted little time disposing of Susan Moore, winning by the final of 16-1. The Lady Bulldogs then blanked Glencoe 12-0 to reach the championship round. They’ll take on top-ranked Plainview on Wednesday at 10:45 a.m.
