Cedar Bluff drops to losers bracket after loss to top-ranked Skyline in East Softball Regional

ALBERTVILLE – Class 1A, No. 4 Cedar Bluff got off to a strong start in the Class 1A East Softball Regional on Tuesday with a 19-4 victory in its tournament opener against Victory Christian, but then fell to the losers bracket after losing to top-ranked Skyline 12-1.

Cedar Bluff will face Appalachian in an elimination game on Wednesday at 10:45 a.m.

After spotting Victory Christian four runs in the top of the first inning, Cedar Bluff battled back for three in the bottom half of the inning, scored three more in the second, and ended the game with 13 in the third.

Mattie Payne and Ciana Smith had three hits apiece for the Lady Tigers. Payne tripled and doubled, scored three runs and drove in two. Smith scored twice and drove in five runs.

Natalie Baty blasted a home run and a double, walked twice, scored four runs and had five RBIs. Rylie Walker added two hits, three runs and two RBIs. Reece Patterson also posed a pair of hits and a pair of runs.

Kylie Vadon and Anna Henderson both doubled, scored two runs and had a RBI. Harlie Nelson finished with a hit, a walk, a run and a RBI.

Patterson earned the win after working 2 2/3 innings. She allowed just two hits with no runs or walks and five strikeouts.

In the loss to Skyline, the Lady Vikings scored five runs in the top of the second inning, added two more in the third and put the game away with five in the seventh to take the win.

The Lady Tigers could manage just three hits. They scored their lone run in the bottom of the third inning.

Payne doubled and drove that run. Nelson and Walker had the other two Lady Tiger hits. Baty walked twice and scored a run. Allen also walked twice.

Patterson tossed 3 1/3 innings. She gave up two earned runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout. Blakelea Hall worked 1 2/3 innings. She gave up three earned runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout.
