Gaylesville finishes runner-up in Class 1A, Area 15 softball tournament

SKYLINE – The Gaylesville Lady Trojans defeated Valley Head twice on Monday in the Class 1A, Area 15 softball tournament and finished runner-up to Skyline to advance to next week’s East Regional in Albertville. They opened Monday’s area tournament with a 16-13 victory, then lost to top-ranked Skyline 17-0, but rebounded to take a 6-1 win over Valley to advance to the area championship game. The Lady Trojans fell in that game against Skyline 7-0.

In the Lady Trojans’ first game against Valley Head, Sydney Smith led the way going 4-for-6 with three RBIs. Emma Givens went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and three RBIs. Logan Giza added a pair of doubles and a RBI. Sierra Holbrook had a double and two RBIs. Shonda Epps tripled and had four RBIs. Jayden Dobbins and Makayla Kimmons both had a hit and RBI.

In the second game with Valley Head, Mackenzie Kimmons tossed all seven innings and allowed four hits with six strikeouts.

At the plate, seventh graders Makayla Kimmons and Lydia Reynolds led the way. Makayla Kimmons went 2-for-3 with a triple and a RBI. Reynolds was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Gracie Dawson had a home run. Sierra Holbrook tripled. Sydney Smith had a double and a RBI. Gracelynn Drake had a hit and a RBI. Givens also had a hit.

Holbrook, Smith, Givens and Mackenzie Kimmons were all chosen to the all-area team.

The Lady Trojans advance to Albertville where they will play the winner of the Area 11 tournament (Spring Garden, Cedar Bluff, Faith Christian or Jacksonville Christian).
