Inmate Dies by Suicide in Cherokee County Jail

According to Sheriff Jeff Shaver, an inmate of the Cherokee County Detention Center died Friday evening in an apparent suicide.

The inmate, William Johnson, age 55 of Leesburg, was found by corrections staff and transported by ambulance to the Floyd/Cherokee Medical Center, where he was then pronounced dead.

That death is being investigated by the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office and Cherokee County Coroner’s Office.

In accordance with all the usual protocol, District Attorney Summer Summerford has ordered that an autopsy be performed; the case will later be presented to a Cherokee County Grand Jury for review.
