Summer Summerford Sworn In as New District Attorney Friday

Cherokee County and DeKalb County officially have a new District Attorney.

Summer Summerford was sworn-in Friday morning (January 13th), filling some very big shoes as she takes over for Mike O’Dell, who has been in the DA’s office since ’81; he was appointed District Attorney in 1996 and won the 1998 Election, serving the area ever since.  O’Dell chose not to run again in the latest election, opting instead to retire – which led to a visit to the Summerford home.

Summerford said at first she wasn’t sure if the job was right for her:

She also stressed that the decision to run sometimes sparked debate among she and husband Josh, who is the Chief Deputy at the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office – and together, they agreed in spirit, how things should ultimately be handled:

Summerford is a graduate of Cedar Bluff school and Auburn, earning a law degree at the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University.  She opened her own firm, and eventually joined the Attorney General’s Office in the Violent Crimes Division before serving as Deputy DA for Cherokee and DeKalb counties.

We wish the best for new District Attorney Summer Summerford as she takes on this extremely important role in the community.
