“Winter Weather Advisory” Expires / Motorists Should Still Exercise Caution

The Winter Weather Advisory has been allowed to expire for all of north Alabama. While the conditions have dropped below Advisory criteria, the threat of hazardous road conditions will continue through the early morning hours.

Law Enforcement Agencies all across northeast Alabama and Northwest Georgia are advising of patchy ice; expect bridges and culverts to have icing – along with some icing on hills and curves. Allow extra drive time to reach your destination safely and slow your travel speed on slippery roadways.

The main concern this morning will be black ice on the roads as temperatures have dropped into the 20’s.  If you need to be out traveling, use extreme caution and drive slow.

During the evening hours Monday, multiple auto accidents occurred in Cherokee, Etowah, and DeKalb Counties.  There was a near head on collision on the causeway on the Centre side of the big bridge with injuries.  Multiple vehicles slid off roadways in to ditches.  Highway 68 going off the mountain into Collinsville had to be closed until State DOT Trucks could treat the roads.  Highways 68 and 9 were treated along with the County Highway department crews treating treacherous county roads.

Due to hazardous driving conditions all county offices and the courthouse will delay opening by two hours.  Offices will be open to the public at 10:00am.
