Gadsden City Council Approves Removal of Low-Head Dam

A low-head dam in Gadsden, where two deaths had previously occurred, will now be removed.

In 2015, a male kayaker died by going over the dam.  During the search and rescue of the incident, two rescue boats also capsized, killing Etowah County Rescue Squad member Vicky Box Ryan.

The Gadsden City Council on Tuesday entered an agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as well as Cawaco RC&D for removal of the dam, which is located at 3916 Brooke Avenue.

Funding for this project will be supplied by the Fish and Wildlife Service and Cawaco RC&D in the amount of $475,000.
