One Person Dead In Head-On Collision In Floyd County

A Chattooga County woman is dead following a head-on collision on U.S. 27 near Old Summerville Road below the Ga. 140 turn on Friday morning.

According to the preliminary accident report from the Floyd County Police Department:

  • A black Hyundai Genesis was traveling north on U.S. 27 while a Ford Escape was headed south.
  • The Genesis crossed over and struck the Escape head-on near Rome Midway Primitive Baptist Church.
  • The driver of the Escape died from the injuries. The driver of the Genesis, Joseph Hale, 50, and passenger Kenneth Thacker of Silver Creek, were taken to Atrium Health Floyd with non life-threatening injuries.

Floyd County Coroner Gene Proctor identified the victim as Lou Anne Loggins, 63, of Summerville. He pronounced her dead on the scene at 10:30 a.m.

Police Sgt. Chris Fincher says an investigation is continuing and charges are pending. The southbound lanes were restricted for two hours following the 9:33 a.m. accident as the investigation got under way.
