Centre Man Charged with DUI and Attempting to Elude

A Cherokee County man was charged with DUI and with Attempting to Elude, after he tried to evade a Leesburg Police Officer during the early morning hours of Thursday.

At around 1:00am Officer Matthew Walker was on routine patrol when he observed a Toyota mini-van with one headlight, turn onto Weiss Lake Boulevard from Industrial Boulevard, heading toward Centre.  Officer Walker ran the tag – and it came back to a Ford F-150 NOT the mini-van.

At that point he attempted to initiate a traffic stop on County Road 26 at the entrance to Bay Springs Marina however the driver refused to pull over and drove through the yards of several lots at the marina campground before heading back to 411 and into Centre – the Centre PD and Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office joined the chase on West Main Street where the vehicle finally came to a stop in front of a residence – and the driver bailed out and fled on foot.

He only went a short distance and then gave up without incident.

James Morgan, 41 of Centre, was booked in at the Cherokee County Detention Center, around 1:50am.  He was released just after 8:00 that evening (Thursday, April 21st) –  after making bond, which had been set at $3,000.
