CENTRE – Cherokee County High School sophomore second baseman Haden Wheeler delivered a walk-off single to right center, propelling the Warriors to an 8-7 baseball win over Hokes Bluff on senior night.
It was Wheeler’s only hit of the game. He finished with two RBIs.
Cherokee County trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning until the Warriors pushed across a pair of runs to tie the game. Hokes Bluff then scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-3 advantage before the Warriors erupted for five runs in the bottom half, capped off by Wheeler’s game-winning hit.
Walker Pruett posted a pair of hits, a walk, two runs and two RBIs. Connor Wilson also had two hits with a walk, a run and a RBI. Malachi Horton had two hits and scored a run.
Tristan Whitefield posted a hit, a run and a RBI. Jeb Crane walked twice and scored a run. Jackson Waldrop finished with a hit.
Whitefield earned the win in relief of Gabe Chester and Pruett. Whitefield allowed a hit and a walk in 2/3 of an inning. Pruett pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up four earned runs on three hits with six walks and a strikeout. Chester tossed two innings and surrendered two earned runs on four hits with three walks and no strikeouts.
