Haygood leads Lady Warriors to area basketball title

CENTRE – Cherokee County High School’s Audrey Haygood tossed in 28 points, including three 3-pointers, in leading the Lady Warriors to the Class 4A, Area 10 girls basketball championship on Friday. Her tournament Most Valuable Player performance helped the Lady Warriors earn a 69-48 victory over Etowah.

Audrey Green sank a pair of treys and had 17 points for the Lady Warriors. Ella Garmany tossed in 10 points. Mary Hayes Johnson delivered eight points. Emily Allen added a pair of 3-pointers and had six points.

Jaleigh Devine led the Lady Blue Devils with 16 points, including a pair of treys. Abbi Martin and Anna Jones both added eight points. Carlee Barksdale and Laura Wood both finished with seven points.

The Lady Warriors led at each of the quarter breaks. They held a 23-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter and a 42-24 edge at halftime. Cherokee County built a 58-35 lead after three quarters.

Cherokee County hosts Area 9 runner-up Handley in sub-regional action on Monday at 6 p.m. Handley lost to Anniston in the Area 9 championship 50-41 on Friday.
