BIRMINGHAM – Cherokee County’s Kaylee Green earned a gold medal in the shotput at the 2022 Alabama High School Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championship held at the Birmingham Crossplex over the weekend.

Green, the third seed, had a throw of 33’9″. It was nearly a foot further than runner-up Allison Bowen’s toss of 32’11”.

Top seed Bowen, from Brewbaker Tech, was also runner-up in 2021.

Green, who finished eighth in the indoor shot in 2021, cleared 33′ in three of her six attempts on Saturday. She entered the event with a seeded mark of 31’4″. Due to Green’s throw, the Warriors earned 10 team points.

Meanwhile, the Cherokee County boys entered relay teams in the 4×200 and 4×400 meter races. A lane violation cost the Warriors in the 4×200 and the foursome was disqualified.

In the 4×400, Cherokee County posted a final time of 3:43.53, which was good enough for 10th place among the Class 4A and 5A teams.

Thirty-two schools were represented in the boys 4A-5A field while girls featured 36.
