A 73 year old man arrested last year in Hoover on child sex and pornography charges is back behind bars, facing new, similar allegations.

Last week Hoover police said Michael John Carter stands charged with possession of obscene matter and possession with intent to disseminate obscene matter.

Carter was arrested almost a year ago – in February 2021 – on charges of first-degree sexual abuse and possession of obscene matter.  The sex abuse allegedly happened in 2016 and involved a minor relative.  He was also found to be in possession of a total 377 images of child pornography, according Hoover Police Sgt. Daniel Lowe.

Carter was released from jail after initially being held on bonds totaling $600,000.

In November, 2021 – Lowe said the Hoover Special Victims Unit received information that Carter, out of jail on bond awaiting trial in that initial case – was again using the internet to solicit child pornography. 

Detectives carried out a search warrant at a motel located on State Farm Parkway in Homewood where Carter was staying and took him into custody.  Investigators found multiple images of suspected child pornography on several electronic devices which were in Carter’s possession.

Carter is currently awaiting transfer from the Hoover City Jail to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held without bond.

The investigation is on-going and additional charges could be filed.
