Public invited to Extended Family Annual Celebration

Extended Family, a non-profit based in Centre, is inviting the public to it’s Annual Celebration of Life, Feb. 5, 6 – 8 p.m, CST, in the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce Meeting Room, 801 Cedar Bluff Road, in Centre.

The Celebration will highlight Extended Family for Kids (EFK) programs, which have reached hundreds of students with loved ones incarcerated. The Celebration includes a free dinner and presentations by Cherokee County students in EFK and Extended Leadership Academy Programs.

“Several of our students wanted to share their stories of personal growth,” said Laure Clemons, Extended Family Executive Director. “At this year’s Celebration, students will give a presentation on the impact EFK lessons have had on their lives. From helping them get their dream job, to becoming better communicators, we have watched these kids grow. It will be exciting to watch them share that at this event.”

Clemons and the Extended Family staff hope everyone will come out and support these students telling their stories.

“The Celebration includes a nice dinner and entertainment, so it turns out to be a fun evening for everyone,” Clemons said.

Extended Family started in Centre in November 2003. In 2007, Clemons created the Extended Family for Kids curriculum, which has been distributed in 18 states. Since 2014, Extended Family for Kids programs have been in every school in Cherokee County.

“The issue of incarceration impacts so many areas of our society today,” Clemons said. “This is not just a prison issue anymore. There are children and families impacted, and we can give those families tools to be successful on the outside while their loved ones are being rehabilitated on the inside. That is what Extended Family is all about – helping folks make better choices, so they can lead healthy, joyful lives, regardless of their circumstances”
