Reports released by the Rome Police Department say a Rome resident was arrested New Year’s Eve after he drove his vehicle toward a police officer during a Road Safety Check on North Avenue at Wolf Drive.
According to Floyd County Jail records – Willie Roger Montgomery, Jr., then fled from officers driving in a reckless manner up Highway 53 – with speeds reaching in excess of 110 miles an hour; Montgomery turned onto Highway 140 and eventually stopped at Rush Chapel Road and also admitted to police that he had been on his cell phone. He was placed under arrest and charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement in addition to felony obstruction, fleeing or attempting to elude and traffic violations.
