Community Foundation Installs New Chair And Board Member

The Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama recently installed Dr. Lisa Long as a member of its Board of Trustees and named Anthony Cook as Board chair.

Dr. Long of Talladega County is the acting president of Talladega College. She received her Bachelor of Social Work Degree from Jacksonville State University, her Master’s Degree of Social Work from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Juris Doctorate from the Birmingham School of Law, and will complete her Ph.D. in Urban Higher Education from Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi, in
May 2022.

Long has 20 years of educational experience with the last 17 years handling progressive responsibilities and achievements in higher education administration and teaching as an academician. She also serves on the Council of Independent Colleges Chief Academic Officers Task Force, Council of Social Work

Education Peer Evaluator, and Honda Workforce of Alabama Diversity Facilitator.

The Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama serves nine counties throughout northeast Alabama and is governed by a volunteer board of trustees. These dedicated individuals provide stewardship for the Community Foundation and its charitable activities by establishing policy, setting priorities, governing effectively, and determining final funding decisions. Our trustees represent the areas of community, education, finance, legal, business & industry, accounting, administration, health & human
services, media & marketing, retail, arts & culture, and entrepreneurship.

“The Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama is deeply rooted in its mission of providing resources
to its constituents that assist in the establishment of a more economically sound society,” Long said. “It
is an honor to serve on its Board of Trustees, and I look forward to contributing to the Foundation’s
continued success throughout Northeast Alabama.”

Cook replaces the outgoing chair, retired Judge Randall L. Cole of DeKalb County.

The position is responsible for presiding over board meetings and working closely with Foundation President and CEO Jennifer S. Maddox to promote the Foundation’s mission to “achieve positive change through the generosity of donors, now and for generations to come.”

The Foundation uses donor gifts to grow funds that benefit the community. For instance, the
Foundation awarded nearly $300,000 in scholarships last year to high school seniors and scholarship renewals to college students in the nine-county area it serves in Northeast Alabama.

Cook, a Munford native who resides in Pell City, is a communications specialist at Alabama Power and was previously a newspaper journalist, having worked as editor at The Anniston Star, The Birmingham News, The Daily Home, and The Huntsville Times. He also serves as the pastor at Christian Fellowship Bible Church in Anniston.

Cook has served as a trustee on the Foundation Board for 12 years.

“I’ve served on many great boards, but the Community Foundation is exceptional in terms of its mission, and the quality of its leadership and staff,” Cook said. “But for the Board’s succession process, this is something I know I could never earn and would never deserve, so I’m humbled by the honor and grateful for the opportunity to serve in this capacity.”
