Campuses at Cherokee County High School, Centre Middle School, Centre Elementary School and the Shepherds Fold Day Care were placed on lockdown at around 2:00 on Friday afternoon after there were reports of gunshots in an area off campus, behind the substation on Northwood Drive near the High School campus.
The shots heard did NOT come from the campus and no students were injured, no shots struck the school or vehicles on campus.
School Resource officers, deputies and Centre Police and EMA personnel responded to the scene.
Officers combed the area and determined that there was no threat to the school or students.
All campuses were reopened just before 3:00.
Cherokee County Sheriff Shaver along with Chief Deputy Josh Summerford were both on scene. Following the ‘All Clear’ Sherriff Shaver issued the following statement “After an investigation, the all clear was given at Cherokee County High School. The school was placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution after students and faculty reported hearing gunshots near campus and being unsure of the proximity to the campus. Sheriff’s Office deputies, investigators, and SROs, along with Centre Police officers and Cherokee County EMA, responded and determined that no shots were fired on or onto the campus. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.”
