Gadsden State to host Alumni Tennis Tournament
Gadsden, Ala. – Members of the Gadsden State Community College Cardinal Tennis Team – past and present – will meet on the courts of Gadsden Tennis Complex for the annual Alumni Tennis Tournament. Play for the doubles tournament begins at 9 a.m. Oct. 30. In the event of rain, the tournament will be rescheduled for Oct. 31 and Nov. 7.
“We are excited to be able to have this year’s annual tournament after having to cancel the 2020 event due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Buster Stewart, coach of the Gadsden State tennis team. “It’s a great time for our players to reunite and compete again.”
Stewart, who has been the coach for 18 years, started the tournament 16 years ago. He hopes to have at least 30 players in the tournament with every team from the past 18 years represented by at least one player. Those interested must pre-register by calling 256-226-2282.
Players are divided into two divisions – Division A for the more competitive players and Division B for the more casual players.
“Every doubles team will participate in at least two matches,” Stewart said. “Winning teams will participate in more, of course, until we crown the division champions.
Champions of each division will win Gadsden State gift bags full of memorabilia, but there’s an even better prize in store.
“The bragging rights for the next year are the most important prize of all,” Stewart said.
Tennis fans are invited to watch the matches at the Gadsden Tennis Complex. There is no admission charge.
