Calcean Minerals & Materials, LLC, to Expand Bioplastics Operations in Gadsden

Calcean Minerals & Materials, LLC, which is headquartered in Gadsden – is expanding their bioplastics manufacturing capacities.

That expansion of the BioPlastics Division of Calcean Minerals & Materials, LLC – will include an investment of $7 million in capital equipment, and it will also add up to 40 new jobs at the Gadsden facility.

Calcean located in Gadsden in 2018 and has continued to expand their operations.

Gadsden Mayor Sherman Guyton said “We’re pleased to have Calcean as an industrial partner, and we are also excited that in-demand and environmentally friendly items are being produced here in Gadsden,”

To assist the company with its expansion the Gadsden City Council approved a seven-year abatement of all state and local non-educational taxes.

Calcean utilizes a biogenic, renewable form of calcium carbonate, which is harvested in the Bahamas to create unique bioplastic products as alternatives to fossil-based plastics, most notably as replacements for single-use disposable food service items.
