Abernathy Found Guilty in Connection with 2015 Slayings / Interview with District Attorney Mike O’Dell

A man charged with killing three people, attempting to kill a fourth, then kidnapping his ex-girlfriend six years ago in Cherokee County has been found guilty on a number of charges in District Court this week.

Donnie Lee Abernathy has been convicted on two counts of Capital Murder, as well as charges of Attempted Murder, Criminal Mischief and Attempting to Elude.

District Attorney Mike O’Dell:

Hamilton later told investigators that Abernathy entered that residence in the Round Mountain community and shot the victims – before forcing her into his Ford Mustang and fleeing the scene:

Law Enforcement was able to take Abernathy into custody, after he lost control of the Mustang and crashed.

Hamilton said she was told to call 9-1-1, and say everything was “okay”, otherwise he (Abernathy) would kill her and she’d never see her child again.

These events occurred in November of 2015, and earlier this week, Abernathy finally had his day in court – being found guilty.  On Tuesday afternoon, Mr. O’Dell explained to WEIS Radio News what went on in Day 2 of the trial:

Sentencing has been set for November 10th.

Mr. O’Dell wishes to thank all those who helped to bring this case to justice, and reflects on his time serving the community in his role as the District Attorney for Cherokee and DeKalb counties, as he has chosen not to seek re-election.
