SPRINGVILLE – Cherokee County High School sophomore running back Lamycal Mitchell accumulated 158 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Cade Hopper in the Warriors’ 35-21 win at Springville on Friday.
Mitchell got the Warriors (1-1) on the board first with an 11-yard run with 7:33 to go in the first quarter. Daniel Mejia’s extra point gave Cherokee County a 7-0 advantage.
Senior running back Damien Ramsey pushed the Warrior lead to 14-0 on a 5-yard scoring run at the 5:52 mark of the first quarter. Ramsey finished with 152 yards on 21 carries and two scores. He also caught a pair of passes for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Springville (1-1) got on the scoreboard on an Ashton Frye 6-yard touchdown run with 4:24 left in the first quarter, cutting the Warrior lead in half at 14-7.
Hopper hooked up with Mitchell on a 17-yard touchdown pass 17 seconds into the second quarter. Mejia’s point after provided Cherokee County with a 21-7 advantage.
The Tigers pounced back on Patrick Bennett’s 12-yard scoring run with just over a minute remaining in the first half. The extra point made it a 21-14 Warrior lead at halftime.
A Hopper-to-Ramsey 55-yard scoring strike opened the third-quarter scoring. With 8:19 remaining in the third, the Warriors were back up two scores at 28-14.
Mitchell scored his final touchdown of the night on a 4-yard run later in the third quarter to push the Warrior lead to 35-14
The Tigers’ Asa Morrison connected on a 65-yard touchdown pass to Johnnie Wolf with 8:39 to go in the game for the final.
Cherokee County plays its first game on its new home turf surface on Friday when the Warriors host Class 4A, Region 4 rival Anniston.
