The Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency has released the most recent COVID-19 numbers for Cherokee County for the month of August.

August 1st – August 30th there were 406 total COVID-19 positive cases in Cherokee County according to the Alabama Department of Public Health. 

Cherokee County Schools went back in session on August 9th. The total number of cases for August 9th – August 30th were 319 positive cases county-wide.

According to Superintendent of Education Mike Welsh during that same time period, 234 of those cases were in the Cherokee County Schools System. 

This means only 85 infections were outside the schools during this time period)

Superintendent Welsh said that during the period of  October 1, 2020 – May 2021(Last Day of School), there were 128 total cases in Cherokee County Schools. 

Cherokee County EMA Director Rogers said “We have had almost double the amount of cases (106 more cases) in the first 22 days of school this year than we had in the last 7 months of the last school year.”

Superintendent Welsh said that as of August 30, 2021, the campus quarantine average for faculty, staff, and students is 4.9%. Currently, there are no schools in the system at the 10% quarantine threshold.

The highest quarantine percentage at any one campus is currently 7.5%. Five schools are at, or below, 3.5%.

Welsh also said that they have had positive cases among students of all ages, including at least 14 known positives across the system in Pre-K and K.

The ADPH School Dashboard is set to go live September 7th and will have numbers reported for the previous week (Tuesday through Tuesday).
