On Monday, Etowah County Circuit Judge George Day issued an injunction effectively blocking the city of Gadsden from approving the construction of a plant near the City Airport; the proposed development project by the Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation, based out of Colorado, would bring large numbers of dead chickens into that area on a daily basis for processing – an operation that opponents say would be a smelly, dangerous nuisance.

According to a report by the Gadsden Times – a trial scheduled for July, would decide whether the ban remains in place OR work can move ahead on that rendering plant –  which has been the subject of opposition from the outset.

Located near homes, schools – and at least one church –  that plant would reportedly  receive 120 truckloads of dead chickens and chicken parts around the clock each day for processing into animal feed.

Judge Day wrote that he was well aware of the need to bring new jobs into the area in the wake of the shutdown of the Goodyear tire plant – however the economic interest has to be balanced against the rights of people in the area.
