NEW EDUCATION LAW TO CREATE ADDITIONAL EDUCATION PATHWAYS AND EXPERIENCES FOR ALL ALABAMA STUDENTS

ARLINGTON, VA – a national organization dedicated to creating an environment where every student receives an individualized education, applauds Gov. Kay Ivey for signing HB 486 into law.

The new law will provide academic credit to students for learning that takes place beyond the traditional classroom. Alabama’s new Extended Learning Opportunities Act allows students to earn academic credit when they engage in quality learning opportunities at approved nonprofits, businesses, trade associations, educators, and many other community partner organizations. 

Andrew Clark, executive director of YES. EVERY KID, issued the following statement: 

“This law emphasizes the importance of ensuring every student receives an individualized and personalized education that meets their needs. We know a child’s education is not limited to four walls of a classroom and we applaud Alabama leaders from both parties, for paving the way for students across the state to receive academic credit in new and alternative learning environments; this law should open the door for students to receive theater credit for participating in the production of a local play, athletic credits through local organized sports program, and or other out-of-school experience that provides a child with an enriching learning experience.” _

House Bill 486 was introduced by State Rep. Rod Scott and co-sponsored by State Rep. Charlotte Meadow, and is intended to create a student-centric education experience, where learning is credited to better enable every student to receive an individualized education.

HB 486 PASSED THE SENATE 26-0 AND THE HOUSE 101-0.
