Piedmont Man Sentenced to 50 Years in Federal Prison for Child Sex Crimes

A Piedmont man has been sentenced to 50 years behind bars, after pleading guilty in federal court on two counts of Child Pornography.

Matthew Allen Smyth, age 37, entered those pleas last December (2020) to one count of the Production of Child Pornography – and also, one count of the Possession of Child Pornography.  Smyth was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge R. David Proctor, to the term of 600 months in federal prison, followed by 120 months of supervised release.

The conviction requires Smyth to register as a sex offender.  According to those court documents, he admitted to enticing a minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct for purposes of producing child pornography between November of 2016 and January of 2018; in March 2018 electronic devices seized from Smyth revealed 15 pornographic videos, and 161 pornographic images of the underage victim.  Smyth produced all the photos and videos.
