County teams see mixed results on first day of Cherokee Softball Invitational

CENTRE – The Cherokee Softball Invitational got underway on Friday with mixed results for county teams.

Tournament host Sand Rock went 1-0-1 with a 10-0 victory over Gaylesville and a 1-1 tie with Fyffe.

Cherokee County and Spring Garden both went 1-1. The Lady Warriors defeated Brewer 8-5 and fell to Plainview 8-1. The Lady Panthers dropped a 9-5 decision to Falkville, but rebounded to blank Jacksonville 12-0.

Cedar Bluff fell a run short against Ohatchee 10-9, then tied Geraldine 3-3. Gaylesville also lost to Fyffe 5-3.

Play continues this morning at 10 a.m. with non-counting contests in the bracket between Cherokee County and Fyffe, Spring Garden and Ohatchee, and Cedar Bluff and Plainview. Sand Rock then takes on Falkville, Geraldine battles Brewer, and Gaylesville faces Jacksonville at 11:30 a.m.

Today’s single-elimination tournament begins at 1 p.m., with Ohatchee against Gaylesville, Fyffe battling Cedar Bluff, Cherokee County taking on Jacksonville, and Falkville against Brewer.

Sand Rock takes on the winner of Ohatchee-Gaylesville, Geraldine gets the winner of Fyffe-Cedar Bluff, Spring Garden awaits the winner of Cherokee County-Jacksonville, and Plainview faces the winner of Falkville and Brewer, all scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Action continues through the championship game, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., at the Centre Softball Complex.
