Spring Garden girls, boys open Cleburne County Christmas Tournament with wins

HEFLIN – Neely Welsh netted 29 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to lead the Spring Garden Lady Panthers to a 72-45 victory over Heard County, Ga., in the Cleburne County Christmas Basketball Tournament on Monday.

Welsh also grabbed 12 rebounds, dished out three assists and had a pair of steals for the Lady Panthers (14-2). Lexie Adkison added 15 points, nine boards, two steals, an assist and a block.

Sarah Kate McKay and Ace Austin both tossed in 11 points. McKay also managed three rebounds and Austin had six boards, four assists, three blocks and a steal.

Abbey Steward finished with six points, three boards and an assist.

In boys action, Weston Kirk and Cam Welsh both collected 15 points in leading the Panthers to a 59-46 win over Vincent.

Kirk added three boards, two assists, two blocks and a steal for the Panthers (7-3). Welsh grabbed six rebounds, had an assist and a steal.

Cooper Austin contributed 12 points, including a pair of treys, with four steals, four blocks, and three rebounds. Ryley Kirk had eight points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Chaz Pope finished with five points, 10 boards, three assists, a steal and a block.

Both Panther squads take on Ranburne on Tuesday. The boys game is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., while the girls play at noon.
