Sheriff’s Office Officials Warning About Scammers Posing as The Sheriff’s Office

A scam is making rounds in the community where scam artists are identifying themselves as law enforcement.

Cherokee County Chief Deputy Josh Summerford says scam artists are contacting people using the Sheriff’s Office phone number saying the person has a warrant and demanding it be taken care of.

The scammers convince the victim that they must pay the scammer money in order to keep from being arrested.

Summerford says that even if you do have an active warrant, the sheriff’s office will NEVER call anyone demanding payment to settle the matter, nor will they ask you to leave cash at an unusual location.

Anyone who receives a call they believe to be from a scammer should contact their local law enforcement.

The sheriff’s office recommends you should never give anyone any personal or financial information over the phone.
