Garden girls smother Westbrook Christian; Panther boys fall

RAINBOW CITY – Sarah Kate McKay sank four 3-pointers and finished with 22 points in leading the Spring Garden Lady Panthers to an 86-18 Class 2A, Area 12 girls basketball win at Westbrook Christian on Thursday.

Lexie Adkison added 19 points, three rebounds and three assists for the Lady Panthers. Maggie Jarrett contributed 11 points, seven boards, two assists, two blocks and a steal. Bri Boles tossed in 11 points and had three assists. Abbey Steward had six points, and Ace Austin finished with five points, 10 rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocks.

The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 31-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter and held a 58-5 lead at halftime.

In the boys game, Weston Kirk netted 21 points, grabbed eight boards, had three steals, three blocks and two assists, but they weren’t enough in the Panthers’ 62-52 setback.

Chaz Pope posted 14 points, five rebounds, six steals, two assists and two blocks. Cooper Austin finished with 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot.

Westbrook led at each of the quarter breaks. The Warriors held a 15-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter and a 26-23 edge at halftime. A 19-9 run in the third quarter gave Westbrook a 45-32 lead.
